21. John Gallup IV. Born in 1675 in Stonington, New London, CT.1 John died in Voluntown, New London Co., Connecticut on 29 Dec 1755; he was 80.1
Founder of Voluntown: On Oct. 8, 1696, the General Court at Hartford wa s petitioned on behalf of English Volunteers "in ye former warr" for a p lantation six miles square to be taken out of "the conquered land". On O ct 14, 1696, John Gallup, Capt. Sam Mason and Leut. James Avery were ap pointed by the Court to view the tract and on Oct. 10, 1700, the Court c onfirmed the tract as Voluntown. He was chosen a Selectman at first tow n meeting in 1721 and he became Captain of the first military company i n 1726.
Capt. John Gallup was one of the early settlers of Voluntown, arriving i n 1710 and taking a large tract of land. He was a selectman, was activ e in securing religious privileges for the early settlers, and was a ru ling elder of the first church, which was Presbyterian [History of the T own of Stonington].
In 1709 when John was 34, he married Elizabeth Wheeler, daughter of Issac Wheeler & Alice Martha Parke.1 Born on 22 May 1683 in Stonington, New London, CT.1 Elizabeth died in Voluntown, New London Co., Connecticut on 14 Apr 1735; she was 51.1
